The earliest year of establishment for each species across all sites. Per the Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test, there was a significant difference across species (χ2 = 43.199, df = 5, P < 0.001). A subsequent pair-wise comparison using Dunn’s test confirms that the earliest year of establishment for lodgepole pine is significantly different than that of all other species; ponderosa pine’s earliest year of establishment is significantly different than that of Engelmann spruce. Boxplot center line corresponds to the median, box edges correspond to the 25th and 75th percentiles, whiskers extend to values that are at most 1.5 times the inter-quartile range, and data points beyond the whiskers are plotted individually. Data were collected in 2016 on the Tripod Fire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Washington, USA
