Schematic of the sampling layout installed at each sample site during the 2017 and 2018 field seasons in southwest Montana, USA. Macroplots were established perpendicular to the slope along the same elevation, and distances between macroplots were adjusted based on the width of the mature stand. The final number of macroplots installed was based upon the width of the seed-source stand, with a minimum requirement of four plots per site. We established at least one belt transect above and below the seed-source stand that was at least 100 m × 100 m, and we sampled all whitebark pine trees within these belt transects
