Samples taken for pyrogenic carbon analyses from (A) fire-killed snags, which demonstrate lighter charring than (B) beetle-killed snags, at the Pole Creek Fire (2012), Oregon, USA. (A) The fire-killed snag had no evidence of mountain pine beetle activity, and samples were taken from the charred bark and the wood under charred bark.
