Firing pattern and fire behavior are an underserved part of prescribed fire science. (A) Strip headfires versus (B) dot patterns typical of aerial ignition are modeled with FIRETEC and show the complexity of fireline interaction on overall burn intensity on plume rise. While an aerial ignition is initially less intense than a strip headfire, there are scale-dependent factors of fire–atmospheric feedback that drive plume development and increase fire intensity of aerially ignitions beyond the initial patterns shown in this simulation.
