A Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI; July 1 to September 31) and sum of post-fire, annual seedling establishment (stems ha−1) from 2006 to 2011 for B ponderosa pine, C Douglas fir, D grand fir, E western larch, F lodgepole pine, and G Engelmann spruce. Only plots that burned at moderate to high severity and without salvage logging were included to reduce the effects of confounding factors. Positive values of SPEI indicate cooler and wetter conditions, while negative values indicate warmer and drier conditions. Note the y-axis scale varies by species. “ND” indicates no data available. Data were collected in July 2011 in the School Fire (2005), Blue Mountains, WA, USA
