Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients for the relationship between annual height growth index and monthly Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) from March prior to the growth year to October of the growth year for the period 2006–2020 for Douglas fir (11 plots), ponderosa pine (15 plots), and grand fir (8 plots) in the School Fire. More positive values of SPEI indicate cooler and wetter conditions. Negative correlations (red squares) indicate that annual height growth increased under warmer and drier conditions. Annual height growth was averaged across all sites because site-level relationships were similar across plots (see Additional file 1: Fig. S4). *P < 0.05, **P <0.01, ***P < 0.001
