Fire-scar seasonality of sampled trees at the Nichols Preserve in the piedmont of North Carolina. Intra-annual fire scar positions were assigned based on the system described in Rother et al. (2018), depicted at the far left (microtome image provided by G. Harley). Imagery of fire-scarred longleaf pine shows the positioning of dormant (center) vs. early earlywood (far right) fire scars. All fire scars at the Nichols Preserve were classified as either dormant or early earlywood. Data were collected in 2019–2021
