Lower surface of basal cross section of a post oak sample (WCH044). White lines and numbers indicate the locations and calendar years of fire scars. Inset shows the entire section with the area inside the dashed line representing the area of the enlarged photo. The pith of the tree is 1771, the same year as a severe fire. Scars on the sample not indicated were in 1786, 1838, 1864, 1869, and 1958. These scars were either represented on the upper side or as microscopic cell anomalies.
