Wavelet analysis helps identify main periodicities in a time series (here, annual area burned) across multiple temporal scales. The power spectrum (i.e., squared amplitude) for the wavelet analysis is depicted in the color spectrum from low (pink) to high (red) frequency. High power indicates periods of high fire activity, and the black lines identify significant periods of high fire activity, how long those periods lasted (y-axis), and the distribution of these periods across the time series
