Location of our study sites (black dots) and main bioclimatic properties: a mean annual air temperature (°C), b mean annual precipitation (mm), c ecoregions, d mean annual net primary productivity (kg C m−2) between 2010 and 2020. Ecoregion delimitations were obtained from WWF (Dinerstein et al. 2017) and they indicate Cantabrian mixed Forests (1); Pyrenees conifer and mixed forests (2); Northwest Iberian Montane Forests (3); Northeast Spain Mediterranean forests (4); Iberian conifer forests (5); Iberian sclerophyllous and semi-deciduous forests (6); Southwest Iberian Mediterranean sclerophyllous and mixed forests (7); Southeast Iberian shrubs and woodlands (8). Meteorological data is from Chazarra Bernabé et al. (2018) and mean annual net primary productivity values are from Running & Zhao (2019)
