Conceptual model for predicting first-order fire effects on non-woody plants. Mortality of aerial shoots will generally be determined by the spatial pattern of combustion, while predicting fire effects on sheltered meristems and seeds within protective structures will also require knowledge of fire heat release patterns. The spatial pattern of heat output from flaming and smoldering combustion in combination with soil physical, plant organ, and seed properties will determine mortality of below ground buds, storage organs, and seeds and potential heat stimulation of germination.
