Distribution of vegetation communities in the Applegate Valley of southwest Oregon, USA, in 2007. Chaparral (here, buckbrush) and grasslands dominate relatively hot, dry slopes, while more mesic areas support hardwoods and conifers. The red vegetation (center) indicates a recent fire. Compare shrub cover in undisturbed chaparral (black box and generally above road running horizontally in center) and in chaparral treated in hand cut pile-and-burn fuels reduction (white box and generally below road).
